# Surplus Coding

While the intention was for coders to only annotate the amount of subregion time required by the age of the target child ([four](/group-1/audio-files/8-17-months.md#8-13-month-files) or [three](/group-1/audio-files.md#14-17-month-files) hours), due to sporadic errors on the part of coders, there were times when the amount of time coded in a given file was greater than the intended amount. To contend with these errors, rather than removing annotations, we have labeled them as "surplus coding".

You can find duration of the required annotated regions of the recording and of the surplus regions in columns `listened_time` and `surplus_time` of [recordings.csv](https://github.com/BergelsonLab/seedlings-nouns/blob/main/recordings.csv). For consistency across months, for months 06 and 07, these number correspond to "the four required hours" and "the rest" even though recordings for these months were annotated throughout (except for silent regions).
